Definition

Refund Abuse is a form of policy fraud where a customer exploits a merchant's return policies to obtain goods or services for free. Common patterns include "Wardrobing" (using an item and then returning it), "Empty Box" claims, and "Item Not Received" (INR) fraud for delivered goods.

Why it matters

The "Silent Profit Killer." While chargebacks are visible and fined by banks, refund abuse often happens within the merchant's own dashboard, bypassing network monitoring. If left unchecked, it can lead to massive inventory loss and negative balance cascades.

Signals to monitor

  • Refund-to-Sales Ratio: Total refund value divided by total sales per customer or cohort.
  • Serial Returners: Customers with a high frequency of returns regardless of dollar value.
  • Refund Latency: The time elapsed between delivery and refund request.
  • Mailing Address Clusters: Multiple accounts requesting refunds for the same physical address.

  • The "Professional" Abuser: Organized groups sharing tips on which merchants have "easy" no-questions-asked refund policies.
  • Account Takeover (ATO): Fraudsters hijacking legitimate accounts with good history to request refunds for new "purchases."
